“THIS IS THE NEXT WAR. THIS IS THE NEXT INVASION. YOU WILL NOT RETURN HOME. YOU WILL INVADE. STAND BY TO INVADE.”
Unfortunately, war is always topical. Each week, month, year, decade, century new conflicts arise across the globe, some new, some historical, all with the basis in economic exploitation.
Mark Ravenhill is one of the infamous “in-yer-face” UK theatre writers of the 90’s.
He wrote Shoot. Get Treasure. Repeat in the wake of 9/11, the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, and consequent ‘War on Terror’. The core theme of this play is fear of the other: the notion of ‘us and them’ fuelled partly by the rhetoric and fear campaigns of politicians and the media. Ravenhill brilliantly juxtaposes and interrogates the multiple perspectives and experiences of war with both gravity and grim humour.
‘You are being bombed. I wake up. You are being bombed. I shower. I prepare fruit. You are being bombed. I juice. I turn on the television and you are being bombed again. The worse so far they tell me.’
